Cooking, building, growing, playing and more will make this summer one to remember.  Sugar Beet Schoolhouse and our amazing staff of chefs and growers have designed awesome projects that will engage campers and teach them new skills that they will use for years to come.

We'll be using our new Sugar Beet Schoolhouse at 349 Ashland Ave in River Forest as home base where we will use our professional kitchen, greenhouse classroom and culinary play classroom to explore food and the natural world. Every Wednesday we will take a field trip by bus, train or foot to visit the movers and shakers of our local food system.

Each week we will MIX IT UP and offer a variety of activities that our campers will love. Each morning will include a hands on cooking project that everyone will enjoy at lunchtime! We are going to eat well this summer! We'll also get OUTSIDE as much as possible to enjoy picnics, games, garden exploration and walking field trips, too. It's SUMMER!

example activities:

  • harvest fresh veggies from the greenhouse for homemade pizza
  • build worm bins, butterfly stations and bird houses for local pollinators
  • make ice cream from scratch and bake cookies for homemade ice cream sandwich treats
  • harvest greens from the greenhouse and deliver them to the local food pantry where we will volunteer
  • screen print tea towels for the kitchen
  • build an aquaponics system and grow our own greens
  • create our own line of sugar scrubs and lip balms using bees wax and essential oils
  • sew aprons for the kitchen and garden
  • take a trip to the Green City Market for shopping and a picnic
  • make food art cards using printmaking materials
  • build a lemonade stand and make fresh squeezed lemon ices for sale
  • have a CHOPPED cooking contest with secret ingredients
  • make handmade paper using flowers from our garden
  • build a piñata to celebrate a Mexican Feast
  • walk to the local forest preserve and pick wild blackberries for jam
  • enjoy a visit from a flock of hens to learn about chickens, eggs and fun animal behavior
  • make our own vegetable dyes to tie dye shirts
  • (we have 1000 more ideas and can't wait to learn what the kids want to do, too!)

Homesteading Camp is for ages 7- 13. We don't use any nuts in our camps and can accommodate all food allergies.
