The month of January invites us to honor the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. We’ll celebrate his birthday by cooking some of his favorite foods together.

ACTIVITIES FOR THE DAY:
Preparing a Birthday Lunch for Dr. King
(using recipes from celebrated African American Chef and Author, Edna Lewis)

- Hoppin’ John (black eyed peas)
- Fried Chicken
- Collard Greens
- Candied Sweet Potatoes
- Mac n Cheese
- Featherlight Dinner Rolls
- Birthday Cake! We’ll bake and decorate several cakes to celebrate Dr. King

** The menu is nut free but includes chicken. No pork/ red meat will be used.
Vegetarian friends can opt out of meat prep and consumption, of course.

While cooking and cake decorating will take much of our time we’ll also pause to reflect on the teachings of Dr. King throughout the day. A day of learning and celebrating, fun and reflection. We always have tons of fun!

"I have the audacity to believe that peoples everywhere can have three meals a day for their bodies, education and culture for their minds, and dignity, equality, and freedom for their spirits."
